Fly Fishing the Kenai

A FEW NICE FLY CAUGHT RAINBOWS AND DOLLY VARDON CHAR FROM 2OO1 SEASON
A 15 POUND KENAI TROPHY RAINBOW THE WILLIE BOAT ALL SET UP FOR FLY CASTING TROPHY DOLLY VARDON CHAR

It doesn't get any better anywhere than the Upper Kenai River, fly fishing for big rainbows and Dollies in August and September when these aggressive, hungry, big predators gather to feed on the spawn of the hundreds of thousands of sockeye salmon.

This fishery is managed as a trophy class fishery by the State of Alaska Department of Fish and Game, and for a special esthetic experience by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This catch and release fishery allows the use of single hook artificial lures only and the use of a boat motor is not allowed.

Fly fishermen who wish to secure the boat exclusive of other anglers will need to pay for a minimum of 3 persons, but that will secure a platform for 2 fly anglers with plenty of room for casting. Designed with 2 stand up fly casters in mind, this boat is a very stable platform (see picture above right).

The fly fishing doesn't end there though. Coho salmon are soon to arrive to the rivers and they are also taken on flies. Earlier in the season chinook salmon can be enticed to accept a fly. These giants of the salmon world hang around the deepest and fastest waters and while they are not for the faint hearted they can be caught by the determined fly caster from the waters of the Kasilof and Kenai Rivers.
