Alaska Halibut

Halibut are doubtless one of Alaska's sportfishing delights. These delicious flatfish can grow to over 500 pounds. Cook Inlet has produced sport caught fish over 400 pounds. One hundred pound fish are not uncommon. In the spring months of May and June we commonly find both king salmon and halibut available and often take home a combination limit of these sport fish.

We are also finding a lot of interest in using salmon tackle to catch these big flatfish. Using small diameter microfibre lines and salmon back bouncing rods we commonly catch these fish using lighter sinkers (usually less than 1# instead of the usual 5#). Even the 15 pound chicken halibut can give the angler a battle with this equipment.

We mostly fish anchored up over holes. The water is from 70' to 300' deep. It is exhausting fishing but very rewarding with sore arms and weary bodies the norm at the end of the day. Not for every one this demanding fishing takes place in dynamic Cook Inlet where the tides are the second most extreme in the world. The tide change at the extremes can exceed 30 feet. The currents can exceed 8 knots. On a clear day the scenery is spectacular and so is the fishing.
