Chinook
(king) salmon are the largest of the species and are available from the
saltwaters of Cook Inlet and Kachemak Bay beginning in late winter with the
most productive time being in May and June.We follow these big fish into the
two rivers in June and July. There are two runs of these giants, the first or
"early" run entering both rivers in abundance in June and the
second "late" run being available in July. Of course the Kenai's
late run of July chinooks is world famous for the 97 lb 4 oz fish caught in
1985. We are still after that elusive 100 pounder. |
|
Sockeye
(red) salmon are available in the rivers as two runs, the first becoming
available in the Kenai in June and the second in both rivers in July. These
are terrific fighting fish up to 15 lbs and excellent eating. |

Coho
(silver) salmon are known as the sport angler's fish. We catch them in
Resurrection Bay and in Cook Inlet in August and September. They are also
available in the two rivers beginning in August running through September. A
second run of coho salmon enters the Kenai in September and is available
until season's end in October. These great fighting fish run up to 20 pounds
and are tremendous game fish on light tackle |
Pink (humpback) salmon are available every other (even numbered) year. These fish enter the rivers in late July and are absolute arm breakers. Their numbers are tremendous to the extent that it can be frustrating trying to get down through them to the coho salmon. What a tough situation! Too many fish!
Chum (dog) salmon while they are not commonly found in the two rivers are occasionally caught here as they pass by on their way to distant water homes.
