The Kenai River produces some of the largest rainbow trout and
char in the state. Nutrients provided by the returning salmon
runs have developed a healthy food chain and the trout and char
benefit from this as well as bears, eagles and sea birds. The
Kenai mountains provide a scenic backdrop for a float trip on
this beautiful river.
This
fishery is managed as a trophy class fishery by the State of
Alaska Department of Fish and Game, and for a special esthetic
experience by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This catch and
release fishery allows the use of single hook artificial lures
only and the use of a boat motor is not allowed on the river.
The float trip begins near the Kenai's confluence with the
Russian River and ends at Jim's Landing or the upper Skilak Lake
boat launch depending upon weather. The stretch of the river
known as "The Canyon" begins below Jim's Landing. We do
that run when weather conditions allow. The primary reason for
this is the necessity for crossing 5 miles of Skilak Lake across
open water which can be very dangerous when exposed to high
winds. The final decision for this is your guide's and he will
make that decision after on site weather observation. Even then
there are no guarantees; it is a mile and a half walk or
overnight on the beach if the wind blows up waves on the lake.
We use four passenger wide body drift boats. We begin at Sportsman's Landing (Russian River Ferry) at 6 am (Sterling Hwy Mile Marker 55) . You will be in drift boat #310, a silver Willie Boat.
This trip is an all day float on the Kenai, includes a gourmet barbecue shore lunch, and begins early, about 6AM, and ends about 4 PM. The lake crossing takes at least an hour and the shuttle nearly the same amount of time.
It is necessary for you provide for your transportation which also is used to shuttle the towing vehicle and boat trailer. You can expect your float trip to take at least 8 to 10 hours.
